Anybody that’s ever set up their own home office knows how vital an electrical source is. You often need more than one of these extension cords in order to get your office rig to operate just the right way. You’ve got computer monitors to plug in (one plug each). You’ve got the CPU, your speakers; you’re often dealing with peripherals such as printers and scanners. All of that and you haven’t even begun to talk about things not related to the computer (such as the land line phone). So it’s no wonder that a huge expenditure at home offices is on this relatively simple device: the extension cord. The problem is that people don’t really know the difference between extension cords. What’s the difference between power strips that provide grounding and those that don’t? What about voltage variation? We often hear that we need to protect sensitive equipment, such as workstations, by guarding their electrical cords with surge protection.
And how do battery backup features work? There are a lot of these devices that offer these features, but it’s hard to tell what’s a good deal, and what’s just a fluff feature. There’s so much out there, in terms of selection that it’s quite easy to fall for some of the marketing gimmicks that are employed by manufacturers in this industry. Of course, you want to concern yourself with limits. There are limits to everything, and these cords are really no exception. You’ll notice that there are specifications to these units as well, not to mention the number of outlets per cord. All of these things matter, and you should really just sift through a large number of these units in order to get your bearings about what’s what in this world. Far too often consumers assume that all of these extension cords are made equal, in a way that sort of makes these units out to be commodities. These are not commodities. They vary a good deal, so it does behoove the attentive consumer to spend some time on studying what features are available, and which of those features are necessary.
You have to remember that most of these electronics (especially the computers) serve critical functions; some of these computers store sensitive data. A power surge can render a workstation useless in an instant (you never want to have a computer plug straight into the wall, without any surge protection, whatsoever). So think about that while you’re out there on the web, shopping for extension cords. Think about the devices that you’re powering up, and think in terms of a defensive stance. You know how they say, “Drive defensively”? Well, you shop defensively when it comes to these strips and cords.
